Description
We will depart from our meeting point at 190 High Street, on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. The first part of our journey takes us to the impressive Blackness Castle, “the ship that never sailed.” This 15th-century fortress served as the port of the nearby royal burgh of Linlithgow. In the 16th century, it became one of the most advanced artillery fortresses of its time and was repeatedly attacked. Today, Blackness remains in excellent condition. Fans of Outlander may recognize Fort William in the castle’s exterior shots or the scene where Jamie Fraser is nearly whipped to death. Only the exterior will be visited. Next, we visit Midhope Castle, also known as Lallybroch, the legendary home of Jamie Fraser. This 16th-century tower house has become a pilgrimage site for fans eager to relive some of its most emotional moments. Entry to Midhope Castle is not included. We then stop at Linlithgow Palace, one of the principal residences of Scottish monarchs during the 15th and 16th centuries. James V and Mary, Queen of Scots, were born here. From 1603, it ceased to be a royal residence despite earlier renovations in a refined French Renaissance style. In 1745, Bonnie Prince Charlie visited, and later it was burned by the Duke of Cumberland’s troops. Today, Linlithgow Palace stands majestically by a lake, surrounded by meadows and woods. In Outlander, it served as Wentworth Prison. We then visit the village of Doune, home to Doune Castle, one of the area’s most popular attractions. This medieval fortress, once the residence of the Duke of Albany, has changed little over time, making it ideal for films and series such as Monty Python, Game of Thrones, and Outlander. Entry is not included. Next is Culross, a 17th-century village on the north shore of the Firth of Forth. Its narrow streets, well-kept cottages, and yellow Culross Palace create a timeless atmosphere. Fans of Outlander will recognize Cranesmuir, the fiscal’s house, and the palace gardens as Claire’s garden. The views from Culross are spectacular. Our final stop is Falkland, a 16th-century village in Fife. Its cobbled streets and colorful houses transport visitors to another era. Falkland Palace dominates the town with its Renaissance architecture and historic gardens. Outlander fans will recognize several exterior shots. Walking through Falkland and admiring the valley makes this visit memorable. Finally, we return to Edinburgh after visiting some of the most iconic Outlander filming locations, completing a journey through history, landscapes, and imagination.Includes
