Cameo
Edinburgh
Tired of the multiplexes? This independent arts cinema, blends the old music hall with the cinema magnificently, and is frequently the venue for the classic, international and artistic films.
Constructed in 1914 as the King’s Cinema, this cinema has weathered the rise and falls of Cinemas, even with two alternate cinemas within a minute’s walk, partly due to their choice of film and their many devotees. Today, one can enjoy some of the best international films that fail to reach the colder commercial box office, as well as many classics and cult films of yesteryear. The additional bar and screens were constructed after Cameo bought out adjacent buildings, and became the first independent cinema with multiple screens outside of London.
The Cameo is a unique experience, where movies have been screened for the last 98 years. There are very few of these cinemas left, and until very recently this cinema was under threat due to the competitive cinema industry – here every visitor ensures the Cameo’s history and future.
