This walking tour provides great storytelling and genuine connection. It isn’t a word-for-word script or a rushed checklist of sights; it’s an inclusive, conversation-led experience where Sami adapts to the group, welcomes questions, and brings Edinburgh’s past to life in an immersive way.
As dusk falls, meet near Makars’ Court beside the Writers’ Museum and step into a city built on stories. Explore further into the Old Town as it grows quieter, moodier, and full of shadows. We weave into tucked‑away closes and overlooked corners, where the city’s darker past feels close at hand after sunset.
Near Edinburgh Castle, we pause for gripping tales of sieges, battles, kings and queens, and the mysteries that still cling to the skyline. From there we descend Castlehill, where Edinburgh’s darker magic comes alive - witches, wizards, and hidden histories woven into the closes and stonework. We continue toward colourful Victoria Street, then into the Grassmarket, a lively square with a brutal edge, where you’ll hear about locals who lived through its toughest chapters.
Next, we reach Greyfriars Kirkyard to meet Greyfriars Bobby. Here we separate myth from truth, then linger for the kirkyard’s darker side - body snatchers, resurrectionists, and the uneasy reasons Edinburgh once feared the dead as much as the living. We rejoin the Royal Mile, meeting the thinkers, philosophers, and larger‑than‑life characters who shaped the city (and left behind a few scandals, too). We finish at Tron Kirk, where the Royal Mile’s layers - above ground and beneath your feet - bring the walk to a fitting close.
Between the big landmarks, we’ll point out the small clues most people miss in daylight - worn stonework, narrow passages, and details that hint at what once happened here.
