Description
This hike offers a chance to observe Highland Cows, Scotland's iconic hairy cattle, living year-round outdoors as conservation grazers helping restore natural ecosystems.
The meeting point is about a 30-minute bus or taxi ride from Edinburgh city centre. The route leads up to a scenic viewpoint with panoramic views of the city, including Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, and the sea.
On the descent, the group passes through the grazing area where Highland Cows can be photographed and observed closely in their natural habitat.
The walk ends at Swanston Farm, where you can enjoy a meal or refreshments (booking recommended). A short walk returns you to the starting point. Optionally, you can visit the nearby Alpine Rollercoaster at the snowsport centre before returning to Edinburgh.
The landscape changes with the seasons: bright yellow gorse blooms in spring, purple heather in summer, autumnal red and orange trees, and winter snow and frost.
