Description
This day trip from Edinburgh combines nature, history, and culture with visits to Stirling Castle, the Kelpies sculptures, and Loch Lomond.
Begin with a visit to the Kelpies, the world’s largest horse-head sculptures, perfect for photographs. Then head to Loch Lomond, located on the Highland Boundary Fault that separates the Highlands from the Lowlands.
At Balloch, you can take a one-hour Loch Lomond cruise to admire views including Ben Lomond and Inchmurrin Island, home to the ruins of Lennox Castle, where Robert the Bruce once sheltered. If you prefer to stay on land, you can explore Balloch Castle Country Park, including the Fairy Glen and Chinese Garden, with panoramic views over the loch.
Enjoy lunch in the National Park before crossing the Dukes Pass into the Trossachs, named from Gaelic meaning “a Bristly Place.” The forested mountains and lochs are within the territory once roamed by Rob Roy MacGregor, whose stories will be shared by your driver-guide. Keep an eye out for the distinctive Highland cows known as hairy coos.
Finally, visit Stirling Castle, historically significant as the royal residence of the Stuarts and Mary Queen of Scots, crowned here in 1543. The castle is linked to Robert the Bruce and Bonnie Prince Charlie and overlooks the battlefield of Stirling Bridge, where William Wallace famously defeated English forces.
After the visit, return to Edinburgh to conclude your tour.
