Description
Depart Edinburgh and follow the trail of key Outlander filming sites. The first stop is Midhope Castle, recognised as Jamie Fraser’s home, Lallybroch. Although the castle ruins are not accessible inside, visitors can sit on the famous steps and admire the courtyard archway.
Next, travel through the countryside to Blackness Castle, known as the ‘ship that never sailed’ for its boat-like shape. Explore the ramparts and the castle that stood as Jack Randall’s fictional base.
Stop at Linlithgow Palace, featured as Wentworth Prison in the series. Here you can enjoy lunch on site, opting for local dishes or a picnic by the loch while taking photos of the palace ruins, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.
Continue northwards past Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument to arrive at Doune Castle, or Castle Leoch. Discover the castle’s real history and the living conditions of a 14th-century Scottish earl. An audio guide explains the castle’s use in Outlander and Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Finally, visit Culross, a well-preserved 16th-century village representing Cranesmuir. Explore Claire’s herb garden, the palace, or stroll the historic streets to imagine life 400 years ago.
