Description
Travel along the North Sea coastline to Berwick-on-Tweed, crossing the Scotland-England border into Northumberland. Visit Lindisfarne, or Holy Island, a tidal island settled by Irish monks around AD 635. This site was key in spreading Christianity throughout northern England and saw the start of the Viking Age with a raid in 793.
Take a short walk through an area of outstanding natural beauty to 16th century Lindisfarne Castle, then visit the Priory where the Lindisfarne Gospels were created. Enjoy views of Bamburgh Castle and the Farne Islands. Souvenir Lindisfarne Mead is available at St Aidan’s Winery.
Return to Alnwick Castle at lunchtime after a short drive. Known as the Windsor of the North, this castle has hosted historic battles and events, including the Guy Fawkes plot. It serves as a film location for productions like Downton Abbey, Harry Potter, Robin Hood Prince of Thieves, Elizabeth, and Blackadder.
Enjoy ‘Harry Spotter Tours’ led by costumed guides for an immersive historical and magical experience. Check the events board on arrival to maximize your visit. With interactive activities for children, you will have 2.5 hours to explore the castle fully.
