Description
Depart Glasgow and travel west toward Loch Lomond, beginning with Dumbarton Castle, Scotland’s oldest fortress with a history dating back to the 5th century.
The next stop offers views of Loch Lomond, the largest lake by surface area on the British mainland, famously celebrated in Scottish folk song.
Visit Luss village with its sandstone and slate cottages, then walk to the pier for views along Loch Lomond and nearby mountains. Nearby is an atmospheric church graveyard featuring graves from 600-700 AD, including a Viking hogback gravestone.
From Loch Lomond, continue on a scenic route to Stirling, passing pretty villages and the optional Glengoyne Distillery stop, including its shop and whisky cask yard.
View Stirling Castle from the approach. The castle is a major historic fortress situated on a volcanic outcrop guarding the River Forth crossing. Explore its extensive history and architecture.
Visit the William Wallace Monument, 220 feet high on Abbey Craig hill, commemorating the 1297 Battle of Stirling Bridge. Climb 276 steps to the top.
Stop at Stirling Bridge, an important 1400s masonry arch bridge near the battle site where Wallace defeated Edward I's forces.
Finish at Bannockburn, where King Robert the Bruce won Scotland’s most famous battle in 1314.
