Description
The tour begins along the ancient Roman Dere Street, crossing from the Scottish Borders into Northumberland. The route passes through rolling hills featuring historic abbeys and villages shaped by centuries of border conflicts.
The first stop is Jedburgh, a historic border town dominated by the 12th-century Augustinian Abbey ruins. You can take a short walk through the town’s quiet streets to view the soaring abbey remains.
Heading south, the tour pauses at Carter Bar on the Cheviot Hills’ edge. This border crossing on the ancient Roman road has marked the boundary between Scotland and England for 700 years.
Entering Northumberland, known for its historic towns and castles, the tour continues to Hadrian’s Wall, stopping at Steel Rigg. Here, you can walk beside the wall and experience the isolation Roman soldiers faced guarding the frontier.
The tour includes visiting Vindolanda, an archaeological site with extensive Roman fort remains and artifacts such as shoes, jewelry, bones, and pottery. Your guide will recommend the best sites along Hadrian’s Wall as you proceed.
On the return journey, the route passes through Dumfries and Galloway to Moffat, a Victorian spa town with mineral springs once popular for their health benefits. Moffat is also known for its distinctive Moffat toffee, a chewy confection with a buttery flavour.
From Moffat, the tour travels north past Pentland Hills Regional Park back to Edinburgh.
