Under the Stairs is a beautiful bar found Under the Stairs and under George IV Bridge, and a hidden gem amongst Edinburgh’s nightlife. If you’re looking to avoid the raucous side of Edinburgh’s bars, Under the Stairs is much quieter than the average fare of the Grassmarket and Cowgate venues. That is not to say that this retro underground bar is rather sombre, but that you can easily engage in conversation, and the locals are unlikely to be loudly drunk.
Being better lit (and less damp!) than the majority of the concealed bars of Edinburgh, this popular haven for hipster students and professionals is always busy with eager clientele, so it may be wise to book for a table if you’re with a larger party. Rather than approaching the bar waiters will attend to you and as the food is also carefully prepared you may be expected to wait.
