Day cruises around Edinburgh give you a pretty different take on the city, one that feels less crowded and a bit more peaceful. You’ll float past the castle, catch a glimpse of the quaint fishing village of Cramond, and maybe spot some seals lazing near the piers. It’s easy to forget you’re just minutes from the city centre.

Most trips leave from Fisherrow Harbour in Musselburgh or Newhaven, depending on the operator. Some take you out to Inchcolm Island, where there’s a 12th-century abbey that’s well worth a wander if the weather holds. Don’t be surprised if the wind picks up – it’s the Firth, after all. Always good to bring a jacket and maybe a hat, even on sunny days.

I’d personally recommend booking a mid-afternoon cruise. The light hits the water beautifully then, and you’ll often catch fishermen returning with their catch right in the harbour. Oh, and try to avoid weekends if you can – locals appreciate the quieter vibe during the week. Grab a hot drink afterwards at a cosy spot back in Leith and you’ll have a memorable, easy day out.
