If you’ve got a couple of days to spare while in Edinburgh, multi-day excursions can turn your visit into something genuinely memorable. You don’t have to confine yourself to the city walls. Head out to the Highlands for wild landscapes that change by the minute, or take the train to the Borders and wander through rolling hills dotted with abbeys that feel like stepping back centuries.

One of my favourite trips is a two-day venture to St. Andrews and the East Neuk coastline. You’ll get ruined castles in the morning, fresh seafood in the afternoon, and salty sea air all the way. And don’t skip the little fishing villages like Anstruther where you can grab a genuinely good fish supper,not the overdone tourist stuff, but the real deal.

If you prefer something a bit more rugged, there’s hiking in the Pentland Hills or even wild camping near Loch Ness if you’re feeling brave. Pro tip: book accommodation early if you’re travelling in summer or around festival season, because it sells out quicker than you’d expect, especially in the smaller towns. Plus, pack layers. No matter the day, weather in Scotland likes to keep you on your toes.
